- Jaylin Goree reporting on Captain Shreve for JAWS.
Friday was a great day to be a gator! We kicked
off our season with a pumped up pep rally full of awesome performances. All of
our spirit groups did a fantastic job getting the crowd excited about the game
that night. Courtney Thomas received a standing ovation when she surprised
Justin Brown and asked him to homecoming. (Insert heart eyes emojis.) Our
student council shook up four of our faculty members by tying tissue boxes full
of ping pong balls to their backs. The only way to win was to dance the balls
out the boxes! We ended our pep rally by singing our alma mater to the top of
our lungs in perfect unison. (Well, sorta).
The student section was green and gold from top to
bottom and full of excitement. Band players were banding, cheerleaders were
cheering, flag runners were running flags, and our mascot was mascoting.
Everyone was sure that Captain Shreve was ready to pummel Pineville (shout out
to the cheerleaders for that phrase) and that’s exactly what they did! Let’s just
say turnovers were the death of the Pineville rebels.
Even with the Gators’ quarterback, Luke Leggio,
breaking his collarbone on the first offensive play, Captain Shreve took their
first W by capitalizing five Pineville turnovers. By the end of the first
quarter, Captain Shreve held the lead after Donovan Banks scored the first
touchdown of the game. Everything from this point on was in favor of the
Gators! On Pineville’s next possession, Julian Charles made an impressive
interception and sprinted a good 50 yards, bringing the score to 14-0 Shreve.
Pineville dropped the ball (literally) on their next offensive play and Shreve
was there to pick it up. (Also, literally). Cory Anaya got the ball to Lewis
for a 33-yard touchdown and with 9:52 left in the second quarter, the Gators
now led by 21.
Chad Usry made a 37-yard field goal and probably would've had another if the officials hadn't overlooked a Pineville played
crossing the line of scrimmage before the snap. Although the attempt was
blocked, Captain Shreve still led 24-0 before the end of the half. Once they
returned, the game pretty much ended out with Lewis’ 17-yard touchdown scamper.
