What Parkway Improved To Defeat Bastrop In 55-28 Win

If you just looked at the 79-56 score of last year’s Parkway-Bastrop game, you might have thought they were playing basketball. A repeat of last year’s high scoring game looked almost imamate with fast pace scoring. However, Parkway didn’t feel like having another shootout and their defense clamped down in the second half.

C.J. Morgan and Juwon Johnson were outstanding for Parkway on the defensive end. Juwon Johnson had a pivotal block punt and returned it for a 20-yard touchdown that swung the momentum to Parkway. Johnson also landed a huge hit that was Sports Center Top 10 worthy. An entire weekend has passed and students/faculty are still talking about the monstrous tackle almost as much as Bastrop’s running back is still feeling it.  C.J. Morgan had a goal line interception and was an overall pillar for the Panthers defense despite dealing with ankle issues. Hunter Huckaby always had another strong performance and led the team in tackles with 13. Parkway only let Bastrop score 8 points in the second half and sacked the quarterback 4 times. The Rams high powered offense exploited Parkways lockdown secondary early, however after the Panthers settled down they held them to just 274-yards of passing.

Offensively, Parkway was firing on all cylinders. Parkway had 599 total yards of offense and had four different players score rushing touchdowns. William McKnight was fantastic, rushing for 167-yards, 74 receiving yards, and 3TDs.  So far, no defense has had an answer for McKnight as he is just having a terrific season. Keondre Wudtee struggled in the 2nd quarter and threw 12 straight incompletions but allover had a great performance. Wudtee showed he has speed to match his howitzer like arm and had a 43-yard scramble for a touchdown. Overall, had one of his best performances all season – 204-yards passing and 2 Passing TD, 72-yards rushing and 1 rushing TD.

Parkway’s young team is looking more polished after every game. They look to take win their Homecoming game against Booker T Washington High
School this Friday at Preston Crownover Stadium.

Byrd Sting's Again

It is like I said before,  it is always a good day to be a jacket- especially after Friday’s 42-8 victory against Mansfield at Lee Hedges Stadium.

Byrd (currently 5-0), ranked No. 2 in the state, actually trailed the Class 3A Wolverines 8-7 at the end of the first period, this did not last for long- not even a quarter. With Byrd’s offense pounding  Mansfield with Byrd’s valuable  full back, Tray Allen #4, who in the first half rushed for 110 yards on 13 carries.

Allen had a 2-yard run soon after  that put Byrd ahead with a score of 21-8- soon after followed by a 4-yard touchdown run that pushed the  lead  to 28-8, proving that the slight funk at the beginning of the game was simply that- a flunk which in no way affected the monstrosity of a win Byrd initially had and the success of this season  so far.

Byrd allowed for  a 1-yard touchdown run from Levonte Hall on Mansfield’s first possession, the Jackets went three-and-out on their first possession. Byrd then scored touchdowns on its next five possessions for a 35-8 halftime lead.

Byrd got a 3-yard touchdown run from Dominic Haggerty in the first quarter to close the gap to 8-7. Demonderick  Wells also scored on a 2-yard run for Byrd’s first lead at 14-8. The two Allen touchdowns made the score 28-8 and Byrd closed out the half with a 32-yard touchdown pass from Duece Casten to Wells.

Mansfield, meanwhile, had just 118 yards on offense and 73 of that came on one passing play from Latiedrick Pugh to Corey Anderson. Byrd took advantage of  the second half and gave some playing time for some reserves. Although the Jackets didn’t score in the third quarter- they   did not need to with such a huge point lead but still scored  points in the second half on a 23-yard touchdown run from Casten.

This Friday, Byrd will take on Lakeshore for the Byrd Homecoming game.
Tune into Jaws for recaps and photos!

Bossier BearKats Fighting Hard

Friday night's game started off with a fumble for Union Parish with a recover by the Bearkats. The Bossier Bearkats couldn't go far with the ball and had to punt to Union Parish. Union Parish gets a touchdown putting them on the scoreboard with 7 points. The Bearkats come back with a return to the 30 yard line but still could not make it past Union Parish's defensive line.

Union makes another touchdown making the score 14-0. The Bearkats receive the ball with #22 Senior Kelvin Brooks making a strong return to the 35 yard line. Unfortunately Bossier's offense could not get a first down and had to punt the ball to Union Parish. Union makes another touchdown leaving the score 26-0.

Bossier's #89 Dion Venious makes a return to get the Bearkat's first and ten. The Bearkats push back hard but are unable to gain another first down. Union Parish makes another touchdown to make the score 40-0. #33 Michael Taylor is in the endzone and prepares to receive for the return.

#30 John Langston goes for a run and is hit hard by Union Parish. The Bearkats prepare to punt the ball once again and stop the ball on Union's 40 yard line. Union Parish runs 53 yards to get a touchdown. The score is now 46-0 with a kick.

Bossier's #42 Senior Isaiah McKinsey fights hard to get to the Union Parish 45 yard line. Isaiah tries again to get the first down but is left with 4th and 3. Union Parish receives and gets another touchdown to make it 52-0.

#33 Michael Taylor runs 47 yards to get Bossier on the scoreboard leaving the score 7-52. Union's #8 is pushed out of bounds by 3 Bearkats just short of a touchdown. Union Parish runs and gets a touchdown to make the score 58-7 without a kick. #33 Michael Taylor makes a touchdown for the Bearkats. Score is 14-58 with a kick made by #71 Bryan Selgado. After Union's return the kneel for every play and win the game 58-14

Benton Tigers Black Out the North DeSoto Griffins.

The night started out with the Benton student section full of students dressed in black to Black Out the North DeSoto setting a great start to the Tiger’s victory against the North DeSoto Griffins this Friday. During the first quarter the team scored a pass from sophomore, John Thompson, to junior, Dorsavion Williams. The pass scored the Tigers the first touchdown of the game against the Griffins, giving Benton a six point advantage for the game. After the touchdown Senior, Jordan White kicked the extra point to give Benton a hold of 7-0 score against North DeSoto. Following White’s kick the first quarter came to an end with the scoreboard remaining at 7-0. During the halftime show Benton’s Tigerline performed an astounding dance to Justin Timberlake’s Suit and Tie followed by the band’s performance that sent the crowd to an overwhelming frenzy of cheers and applause.

When the second quarter came around the Benton offense fell back almost letting the Griffins score but the team came back and pushed the Griffins back past the fifty yard line. The game remained mainly defensive. Benton pushed the Griffins back and they pushed back.

Throughout the remaining quarters the score remained 7-0 but the student section remained just as lively throughout the whole game keeping the team pumped and ready for the end. At the end of the fourth quarter the Benton Tigers enjoyed the victory celebrating with friends and family on the field and closing the night with a prayer. Everyone from the middle school students, to the high school coaches, faculty, students, cheerleaders, dance line, band and players gathered around the center of the field and gave thanks for an amazing night and many more to come.

All About the Quarterback

Cody Morgan, quarterback of the rebel football team, is very dedicated to his team and teammates.

According to Cody, being quarterback is no different or any more important than any other position. "We just lead by example and stay positive," says Cody.

During the Delhi vs. North Caddo game, Cody injured his hand. It was the second quarter and the play was at the ten yard line. The running back from Delhi, Christian Colvin, was charging toward Cody and the buckle on his helmet cut his hand.

Cody continued to play, not missing but a single play of the game.  At half time, the coaches wrapped his hand and he entered the third quarter just as strong as before.

He is also starting to adjust to the new coach. Cody says, "Since I've played at North Caddo, I've had three coaches. It is kind of hard to warm up to one when he leaves soon after starting."

Cody goes on to say that he is very impressed with the work that Coach Dupree is doing. "He's definitely turning the program around. We weren't disciplined at all and he's whipping us into shape, for sure."

Coach Dupree also seems to be very impressed with Cody.  "I like to use Cody as an example. He's a senior, he's been in live game situations, he's been through trenches. After his injury during the Delhi game, he showed up to practice on Monday, ready. He has a desire to win and to play no matter what." Coach Dupree says.

Cody is enjoying his final season of high school and making the best of it.

Northwood Homecoming Win

Last week's game was another victory for NHS. We won a spirit stick and the school spirit stay all day long to push the Northwood Falcons Football Team to victory for our homecoming game against Loyala Prep.

Everyone was decked out in school colors and dancing down the hallways all day getting pumped up for the game. The pep rally at the end of school showed the Homecoming Court.

At halftime, they announced the homecoming court again, along with the Homecoming Queen Kirsten Griffon. We finished the 55-17, giving Northwood another W for the season.

Win or lose, to God be the glory

It’s always a good day to be a Jacket

It’s no doubt that students are proud to be a Jacket at C. E. Byrd High School- especially after the Yellow Jackets 42-13 win last Thursday against Calvary in addition to  Byrd’s new state and national rankings-second best in the state and sixty-eighth in the nation. Student’s excitement  has been stirring in the halls ever since the massive Yellow Jacket success during  Battle on the Border against Eldorado and keeps growing as Byrd’s current record of 3-0 continues to improve- and if this Friday’s game against Mansfield at Lee Hedges Stadium is any like the last, Byrd is soon to be 4-0.

With its faster defense and an extremely impressive offense, it is no wonder Byrd’s team is doing so well. Last weeks game had many impressive plays including those executed by  running back #10 Dominic Haggerty, a current Times Player of the Week nominee’s, four touchdowns, including an 85-yard kickoff return to start the second half with a  28-7 lead that only increased.

In the fourth quarter, Byrd’s defense forced two incompletions from the Byrd 31-yard line, but Haggerty ultimately scored the game away with a 69-yard touchdown sprint on the next play, giving Byrd a 35-13 edge. Haggerty finished the game off  with 134 rushing yards and a kickoff return for a score for Byrd.

Other impressive players include fullback Tray Allen, #4, addition of 70 yards, running back Demondrick Wells, #1,  gain of 56 yards, and quarterback Tyler Howard added 27 rushing yards.
Although Byrd’s new rankings and successful game did boost morale, Students at Byrd are proud of our football players everyday of the week and it shows by the dozens of hand painted banners scatted around the stairwells at Byrd, the volume of our student section, and the on-going support for both  Byrd’s  academics and athletics.

Come join on to this feeling of school pride and support our boys this week as they take on Mansfield this Friday at 7PM at Lee Hedges Stadium and be sure to tune into Jaws over the weekend for game recaps and photos!

Who is the King of the Jungle

Last Friday night the Plain Dealing Lions and Benton Tigers renewed an old rivalry to determine who would be Kings of the jungle. This was certainly a game you didn't want to miss, and there wasn't an empty seat in the house.

In the first quarter, the Lions took a chance on fourth and inches and couldn't convert; the Tigers capitalized with a 25-yard touchdown. The Lions quickly answered with an 18-yard pass from Logan Allen to Isaac Jacobs. Although the Lions  had 3 chances to get the 2-pt conversion due to pass interference, they were not able to punch it in and the score remained 7-6.

For the rest of the game, the Tigers and the Lions both stepped up on defense and while both teams had some chances, the score did not change anymore.  Both teams earned the others respect and all fans left proud of their respective teams.

The Lions will suit up Friday night at 7 against Logansport.

3 N O!

-Jaylin Goree with the story on Captain Shreve Gators for JAWS.

3 N O!

Last week was a great one for the Gators! Our homecoming week was a success and everyone was excited to learn that Jennifer Pickens was named the 2014 Homecoming Queen. Big news was all over Captain Shreve!

For the first time since 1996, Captain Shreve's football team is currently undefeated.
Yes, it's just week three but for the Gators, this is a huge deal.

The game against Mansfield was a battle well fought by both teams. The Wolverines came out strong for the first half, leaving Captain Shreve trailing 19-14 with only 51 yards. However, the Gators came in head first at the beginning of the second half.

Marching 66 yards on 16 plays, the Gators got Donavan Banks to the end zone bringing the score to 21-19. Shreve now held the lead and wouldn't let go for the rest of the game.
Even though Shreve took that W, there was never a moment when the Wolverines gave up.

With less than two minutes left on the clock, Mansfield drove to the 9-yard-line but Julian Charles picked off a pass from Latiedrick Pugh at the 2! (Almost had it. Gotta be quicker than that.)

Time expired but the Gators were called for defensive holding away from the play. This gave Mansfield one untimed down from the 18-yard-line. (Still don't believe in second chances?) Pugh was aiming for Jimmie Jones but Taireek Anderson stepped in and picked it off. Running it back for 100 yards (yes, 100 yards), he scores one last time for the Gators. This brought the score to 41-27, giving Captain Shreve another win.

The Gators will be traveling to Dutchtown High School this Friday. Will they return 4-0? I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Parkway Serves Hungry Fans Roasted Pig in Home Opener

After being deprived of having the opportunity to watch their Panthers for almost 11 months, Parkway fans packed Preston Crownover Stadium to finally watch their team manhandle Arkansas High 41-14. The blossoming Panthers squad shined with a fireworks display of offense and a defensive performance that would even impress Pete Carroll’s Seahawks.

Parkway had a slow start thanks to an early Jared Lancaster tipped pass that lead into an interception for the Razorbacks. With the favorable field position, it only took Arkansas 8 plays to score on the Panthers. After a couple of failed drives due to dropped passes/overthrows and a blocked field goal attempt, Parkway scored thanks to a Dante Williams forced fumble on Arkansas’s 6 yard line. Stacy McCray juked past defenders to tie the game 7-7 on a 6-yard run to close out the quarter.

After giving the fans a reason to be on edge, the Panthers offense exploded in the second quarter. William McKnight scored 2 rushing touchdowns on short yard runs and McCray turned on the jets to burn the Razorbacks secondary on a long 46-yard receiving touchdown. Demetrius McAtee shined averaging 11.75-yards a carry and closed out the second quarter with a 19-yard TD reception. With a half time score of 34-7 Parkway, both coaches agreed to a running clock and let their subs gain ample experience for a final score of 41-14.

Parkways had a balanced attack with 308 yards of total offense- 133 rushing, 175 passing. Panthers relied on a plethora of backs to handle the load with the main rushers being Demetrius McAtee 47 yards, Stacy McCray 33 yards & 1 TD, and William McKnight 15 yards 2 TDs. Keondre Wudtee is settling nicely into the offense and improving his performance each game. The young QB went 7-18 for 163 yards with 2 TDs, 1 INT.

Defensively, Parkway performed on an exceptionally high level with two interceptions and four forced fumbles. Parkways secondary (self-named “The NoFlyZone”) had an outstanding showing, holding the Razorbacks to just 27 passing yards. Key players, C.J. Morgan and Dante Williams locked it down with sticky coverage and never let their man break free all game. Dante Williams also showed those hands aren’t just good at deflecting passing and was credited with forcing two fumbles. Juwon Johnson and Peyton Bush each nabbed an interception and helped stamp the message that you can’t beat this Panther team by going to the air. Kyle Stills continues to have a strong season and pressured the quarterback all game, while Semaj Tarver led the team in tackles with 6.

Parkway looks to make it 3-0 against out of state teams with a win against Bastrop High School (Texas) this Friday at Preston Crownover Stadium.

The Day Northwood 'Dropped The Bass' And Renamed Their Stadium

Tiffany Collinsworth covering the Northwood Falcons for JAWS.

Northwood High School has been full of spirit all day by wearing neon colored clothing and face paint to "Drop The Bass On Bossier".

Before the game started, there were a few performances made by the Blanchard Elementary cheerleader with some assistance from Falcon Line.

Once the game began, a touchdown was made by Northwood within the first 54 seconds of the first quarter.

At half time, the score was 48 Northwood - 0 Bossier.

Before the halftime show that was performed by Falcon Line, the school honored the recently passed Jerry Burton who had been a teacher and coach at Northwood for many years. The Stadium was renamed the " Jerry Burton Memorial Stadium" by Northwood and the Mayor of Blanchard stated that September 18 would be Jerry Burton day. After the halftime show, the game continued and the final score was 55-7 in Northwood's favor.

Evangel Eagles: Before & After Friday Night's Loss

After a week of intense practice I got to sit down with Matt Guth (#38 Punter) and Trent Jackson (#24 cornerback). Here's what they had to say about this weeks practice!

Evangel lost Friday to Northside 13-10. Even with the record being 1-3 Evangel still has an amazing athletics program and I am sure next Friday's game against St. Thomas More will be a well played game.

Rebuilding the Rebels

Haylie Meadows reporting on the North Caddo High School for JAWS.

The North Caddo Rebels played the Delhi Charter Gators, Friday, September 19, at Delhi. The Rebels lost to the Gators by a score of 38-0. The Gators scored their first 6 points in  the first quarter of the game. There were several great plays through out the night.

North Caddo remained strong and kept their heads held high. The Rebels may not have won, but they always come out stronger than before.

With the arrival of our new head coach, Chuck Dupree, the Rebels are working on rebuilding the team and making it stronger than ever before. It will take time, hard work, lots of sweat, and a bunch of dedication and loyalty. We have no doubt that the Rebels will push harder than ever to make the team what it needs and deserves to be.

Win or lose, the Rebels are a family and will continue to be no matter what.

Teammates or Brothers?

-Anna Howell covering Calvary for JAWS.
According to the Mirriam Webster Dictionary, a teammate is “a person who is on the same team as someone else.” The boys of Calvary football are much more than that. When watching the game, it is clear that these boys work well together, some of which may be due to the fact that they potentially have a tighter bond over all than the players at a larger school. Seniors Orlando Bradford and Shun Brown, two players in the spotlight, had something to say on this subject. When asked who their closest friend on the team was, they named each other. According to Bradford, he feels like “...We know each other best, and [I] feel like [we] know what’s going through each other[‘s] head at times.” This would explain a lot of impressive plays from these two.

Brown described the bond between all the boys on the team as family, a heartwarming concept. When David Doeker and Jaise Young, also seniors, were interviewed, they had similar views. Doeker stated that “We always got each other’s back.” Young put in that this bond affects how they play because “You need a good bond between one another,” making it harder to communicate otherwise. Even though focused on their sport, the boys still have a lighter side and enjoy themselves. “We are a very joyful group of kids, we like to have fun.” says Young. “...We also...pick fun at each other in all fairness.”

Panthers play was McKnight and Day compared to Season Opener

- Josh Lozano reporting on the Panthers for JAWS.

Parkway had an amazing bounce back game against Marshall (TX) high school with a 45-21 victory at the 4th annual Battle of the BorderThe young Panther team shined with an offensive showcase in the second half despite a flag happy performance by the officials.
Parkway’s offensive effort was led by William McKnight who was a leviathan against Marshall’s defenders, collecting 3 touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving) with 160 all-purpose yards. McKnight’s stellar performance was a mix of power and pure speed. Performing his best Calvin Johnson impression, McKnight leaped high to grab a pass and burned his defenders for a long 62-yard touchdown in the 3rd quarter. McKnight’s two rushing touchdowns came from powerful a goal line push and 5-yard TD run where would be tacklers struggle to wrap up last year’s 1-5A All-District Offensive Athlete.

Other key players contributed to the Parkway offensive explosion. Jared Lancaster caught a game high 7 passes for 129 yards. Demetrius McAtee helped soften up the defense with strong, running burst for a total of 95 yards. Wudtee had an impressive bounce back game after giving up 6 turnovers in his first start against CalvaryThe inexperience Wudtee showed his potential by throwing for an impressive 15-of-18 289 yards and firing a laser pass to McKnight for an impressive touchdown. He also had two goal line rushing touchdowns to make a total of 3 TD on the day. Overall, the Panthers had a total of 541 yards against Marshall with a well-balanced attack252 rushing, 289 passing.

Defensively, the Panthers were solid once again and their shutdown secondary showed why QBs think twice before going for the long ball against them.Parkways C.J Morgan had a stellar interception against John Love to protect the end zone after Marshall gained some favorably field position on a punt that bounced off a Parkway player. Dante Williams came close to having a pick six after C.Js interception, but dropped it in mid stride. Another interception was waved off by pass an interference call. Parkways defensive ends, although outsized by Marshall’s offensive line, brought great pressure to the Marshalls QB and caused havoc to the running game all day. Defensive lineman Kyle Still got to the know Marshalls quarterback pretty well after getting a monster sack on 3rd downdespite having to square off with a much bigger guard. Hunter Huckaby had a strong performance and led the team in a string of 3 and outs. Hunter is also credited with making a big tackle for loss that caused Marshall to punt.

It was a much needed win for the inexperience Parkway squad and they look to pull a win in their first home game against Arkansas High this Friday at Preston Crownover Stadium.

Don’t Call It A Comeback!

- Jaylin Goree reporting on Captain Shreve for JAWS.

Captain Shreve strikes again!

Both teams came in strong, battling head-to-head, with everything in them. The first quarter ended out with both Captain Shreve and Northwood having nothing on the board.

Nearing the end of the half, Northwood’s Delaney made a 13-yard touchdown, meaning Northwood now held the lead. However, after a failed Falcon kick, Captain Shreve had just enough time to let Chad Usry make a 40-yard field goal. Even though the kick was good, Northwood held their 6-3 halftime advantage.

Heading into the final quarter, the Falcons led 19-10 and things started to look dim for the Captain Shreve Gators. (Don’t worry we never actually lost faith.) Lewis came through clutch with a 2-yard scoring run after Shreve’s 76-yard drive. The score now stood 19-17. (They ain’t done yet.)

Charles picked off a Northwood pass by Valeras at the 43 and after 13 plays with two minutes to play on a 1-yard dive, Vencent Gonzales gave the Gators a 24-19 lead. This score stood giving the Gators their second win of the season.

Will there be a 3-peat at next week’s homecoming game? Find out next week when the Gators take on the Mansfield Wolverines.
