Panthers Goals Remain Intact

The Parkway Panthers suffered their first District 1-5A loss last Thursday against Byrd.  We posed the question, 'What stands between Parkway and the postseason," to a Panther senior.

"The biggest challenge to making into the playoffs has to be playing the talented teams that are in our division, they always end up being good games to play in."
- Peyton Bush, Senior DB

All we do is win! Byrd Rolls To 8-0 Mark

The Byrd win over Parkway last Thursday at Lee Hedges gave fans another thing to be proud of- especially with Byrd’s record of being 8-0 and 2
nd in the state.

Byrd’s backup quarterback, Deuce Caston, filled in for starter Tyler Howard again this week, and just like the 48-7 victory last week over Shreve, he did not disappoint.

The endurance of both teams showed throughout the game leading up into a tie which led to overtime and ultimately another win for the Yellow Jackets.

Considering Parkway is the only team Byrd lost to on the road to state in the Mercedes Benz Superdome last year, Jackets fans are excited to see what the rest of this season has to offer.

Next week the Jackets play Southwood at Lee Hedges Stadium. Tune into jaws for recaps, photos, and more!

Evangel On Track After Mid-Season Hiccups

Plain Dealing Improves To 7-1, Hurdles Remain On Road To Playoffs

This week, our question of the week: What's the biggest challenge at this point for Plain Dealing to make it to the playoffs.  We caught up with Bijan Mitchell, a junior Linebacker/Offensive Tackle to get the answer:

"The biggest challenge to make it to the playoffs we need to step up on defense, avoid injuries, stay in shape, and execute plays," Bijan says

Calvary Rolling Along In District Play

   Where We Are Now
At this point in the season, a lot is going on. The Calvary Cavaliers are doing extremely well, as they begin to close up their scheduled season. When asked what he likes about the team at this point in the season, Calvary Senior Kurrell Vaughn had quite a bit to say. He feels they are becoming better as a family and getting better and better each game. He states, "We clean up all kinds of mistakes and …our future is looking very bright." Vaughn, number 46, is a defensive tackle recently committed to Northwestern. Kurrell thinks that Calvary's biggest challenge to making it to playoffs is "passing  teams, as far as the defensive front." "We've been really focused on teams that run the ball a lot so…playing a passing team is very different for us because…we're run first defense." It is good to know that the Cavaliers are in touch with what they need to work on and pursuing their goals positively.

That's My King: Evangel Half Time Show

Evangel Varsity Cheerleaders performed an amazing message to "That's My King" during half time.

Shreve Takes a Stinging Loss

Boy, oh boy. Last Friday was the most intense game Shreve has experienced so far. Not because of the game itself but because of the ongoing rivalry between Captain Shreve and C.E. Byrd! All week long, both school's participated in a little trash talking and shots were fired (Not actual shots though).

Captain Shreve participated in their annual "Byrd Week," which is where each day the students dress up to a different theme. However, because there was no school scheduled for Friday, the Byrd-Shreve Pep Rally was moved to Thursday. Nonetheless, the Gators were still pumped up and ready for the game!

Friday was when it all went down. Fans were in the stands hours before kickoff time, ready for war. Gators were decked out in all black outfits while the Jackets came in their camo for "gator hunting."

Byrd came into the first quarter head first, scoring a touchdown within the first twenty seconds of the game. The Jackets scored back to back, crushing Gator offense with an impenetrable defense which ultimately resulted in C.E. Byrd remaining undefeated. Captain Shreve now stands with a 3-4 record.

Although this game was a drastic loss for the Gators, they are still working hard to prepare for the battle against Haughton this Friday.

Evangel's Brilliant Game!

During the first quarter Evangel and North Webster both scored starting the game off with a score of 7-6 Evangel up! Player #76 Jerry Tillery pushed the offense all the way to Evangel's end zone. Also during the first quarter #85 made a 81 yard field goal bringing the score to 10-6 where it would stay for the duration of the game.

Evangel made multiple touchdowns that were flagged and not counted for the duration of the game.

The final score was 10-6 Evangel winning.

Evangel Varsity Cheerleaders performed an amazing message to "That's My King" during half time. Big thanks to Mr. Claude Price for the amazing photos as always!

Stingin’ Shreve

The Byrd High School Yellow Jackets got some “gator gumbo” with their 48-7 victory over Captain Shreve this past Friday night at Lee Hedges Stadium.

The Byrd vs Shreve game is always one of the most spirited games of the season due  the cross-town rivalry between the two schools. Students at Byrd raised spirit all week for the game with a Shreve themed K-Byrd episode, tail gates, spirit banners and wearing camo- the excitement wasn’t a waste though, because the Jackets seemed to get rid of any remote sense of equality by scoring almost every way imaginable during the first half.

Byrd is now  7-0 (District 1-5A), the state’s No. 1 team in the power ratings- leaving  students proud to be a jacket. Although the Jackets did not play with starting quarterback, Tyler Howard, Deuce Caston was an able fill-in- and did not disappoint.

The victory over the Gators was a great way to kick off the start of a 4 day weekend for students who are looking forward to the Byrd vs Parkway game next Thursday at Lee Hedges.

Tis The Season

... for HOMECOMING

Calvary is preparing for the upcoming homecoming game against Lakeview this Friday

Tensions are high as students and parents get ready for the homecoming court presentation Friday and dance on Saturday. No doubt this is one of the most exciting weeks for Calvary. This is the Cavaliers second district game this season, and sadly already the second to last scheduled home game.

This 2014 football season is shaping up to be a good one; the Cavs only having one loss so far. The Cavaliers are doing exceptionally well and making this a season to remember.

Parkway airs it out in 49-14 district win against Captain Shreve

The Gators could not contain the Panthers who looked dominate in their

first district game with a strong performance by Keondre Wudtee. Wudtee passed

for 268 yards and 4 touchdowns. Overall, he showed great poise and was able to

pin point the long ball with ease oppose to his shakier starts early in the season. It

helped that Wudtee had a solid core of receivers to throw to. Jared Lancaster

burned the Gators secondary for long 93 yard reception and 3 other panthers

contributed with touchdowns.

Parkway held control of the game from the get-go by taking an early 14-0

lead in the first quarter thanks to the Lancaster bomb and a quick screen play to

McCray. The Panthers kept pressure on Shreve with a quick score in the second

quarter and Caleb Monroe interception leading into a McKnight touchdown.

Gators remained scoreless in the first half due to gritty defensive stands by

Parkway and a missed FG. Gators didn’t score until the very start of the 4th

by then Parkway led 42-7. The final Parkway touchdown came off of a fake punt

where Jujwon Johnson ran for a 64-yard TD. Overall, the young Panthers team has

taken great leaps as the season has progressed and is totting one of the more

explosive offenses in 5A.

Parkway looks to get its second district win against opponent Southwood

this Thursday at Lee Hedges Stadium.

North Caddo Pitching In For October's Huge Awareness Movement

Our Rebels dressed in pink socks for Breast Cancer Awareness month.

The cheerleaders gather and pray together for a safe night on the field.

The Rebel Steppers put in a great performance for the crowd.

Byrd does it again!

After a successful 50-3 homecoming game victory last week against Lakeshore, Byrd (currently 6-0) was more ready than ever to defeat Airline this past Thursday at Lee Hedges in the first district game of the season-  and as always, the Jackets did not disappoint.

Although the Jackets seemed to need a pick-me-up after a slow start in the first quarter, Byrd ended up pulling out another win  (31-13) thanks to the hard work of Byrd’s state-bound football team and good plays due to some special teams units. From the beginning, Byrd  scored two touchdowns from these special teams alone, which ended up giving Byrd the pick-me-up they needed- especially after a bad Airline punt snap, which gave Byrd an additional score.

Impressive plays began early on as defensive back Dayton Johnson (#34) blocked an Airline punt with the Vikings backed up. Soon after in the end zone, Tyler Johnson (#7) scooped up the ball and ended the first quarter with a 7-0 lead.

After two Byrd drives, a punt block occurred, which resulted  inturnovers as Airline recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass in the end zone. After this, Byrd’s defenselead by  coordinatorStacey Ballewforced two three-and-outs, the second of which resulted in a blocked punt. Airline did not receive a first down on their third drive and Byrd’s Demondrick Wells (#1) returned a  55 yard punt  for a touchdown as well as  Dominic Haggerty following suit. These two in addition to an impressive interception on a 70-yard drive  by  Jacob Bullard (#33) shut out the Vikings in the first half and gave Byrd an impressive 21-0 lead.

After a good half time performance by Byrd’s band- the “heart beat of the city”, who preformed a few songs from their show this year “Tribal Effect”. The Jackets returned back to the field. The third quarter kept Byrd in a strong lead. Unfortunately, while Airline was down by 31 points in the middle of the fourth quarter, they scored on two drives and a touch down.

But despite this, Byrd’s defense still ruled the night, and heldAirline scoreless until touchdown drives in the last four minutes of the game. In the final minutes Byrd kicker Jake Wyss (#57) made a 31-yard field goal.

The victory from the Airline game was a perfect way to kick off the beginning of Byrd’s district games and give Byrd students even more things to be proud about. Next week the Jackets play rival,  Shreve Friday night at 7:00 at Lee Hedges Stadium. Tune into Jaws through out the week and after the game for recaps and photos as Byrd gets ready to sting Shreve!

Number One on the Field

A lot of talk follows Calvary Quarterback, Shea Patterson, and all his achievements. Being a top recruit, this is not at all surprising. What is surprising, is the fact that he has not always played quarterback. One might think that in order to be the best he must have started extremely young, but Patterson actually spent his days on the grid iron as a fullback until the fifth grade. If playing QB was not an option, Shea stated that he would like to give free safety a try.

It appears as if family plays a huge part in his life, as he said his greatest role model is his older brother. Not only does he believe Calvary Baptist Academy’s coaches are the best in the state, his favorite part of Calvary football is the amount of time he gets to spend with his teammates. They are like a brotherhood or family.

Shea thinks all the attention he gets is good and bad, so he just tries to “focus on getting better everyday and..... [my] teammates.” He has the right mindset, since his ultimate goal for football is to play in the NFL. Handling all the attention seems rough, not to mention juggling normal teenage duties. When asked how he manages it, he simply says, “stay humble.” Even under all the pressure Patterson seems to have a good head on his shoulders and an excellent work ethic. No doubt this will carry him far.

Find Out How This Homecoming King Celebrated His Title

The Plain Dealing Lions suited up Friday for their homecoming. The girls looked great and the boys played even better.

Playing in front of a packed house, the Lions started off strong and never slowed down. Logan Allen celebrated his Homecoming King title by throwing 4 TD passes, Desean Morris and Derreon Washington both added a rushing TD, and Herbert McCauley returned a fumble for another six points. The Lions’ defense showed  just how good they are by shutting out North Caddo’s offense.

The Red and Black did what they needed to do, and all the returning  alumni left the stadium smiling after the 44-0 final score.  The Lions advanced to 4 and 1 and hope to start district play with another victory Thursday night at 7:00 against Ringgold.

School Record 57 Yard Field Goal Attempt... Did He Make It?

A team is a group of players becoming one. A team works together to accomplish a mission. A team is a family. The North Caddo Rebels are a team, they are a family.

Last Friday night at Jonesboro Hodge High School, our kicker, senior Jhesus Vargas, was told to attempt a 57 yard field goal. With hearing this, Jhesus said he was very nervous and shocked.

In practice he would kick 40 and 50 yard field goals and make them. Then he would attempt a 55 yard field goal and always be short.

Jhesus chose to kick towards the scoreboard from the left side of the field like he always does at practice.
"When I got out there and got all set up, I just stared at the field goal post thinking this is too far, I'll never make it." Said Jhesus.

Thanks to the encouragement of his teammates, Jhesus made the kick. Everyone jumped up and cheered with excitement.
"When I saw the referees hands go up, I was in shock and I was so happy. It was the longest kick I've ever been able to make in a game." Vargas explains.

Jhesus's kick was a Jonesboro Hodge record.

Coach says that Jhesus is, "hard working, he comes to practice and does his kicking. It's good to see him have success."

Jhesus also scored a 22 on his ACT. He's clearing house ready, he plans to attend either LA Tech or NSU to become an engineer. Although if Vargas receives a football scholarship, he says he'll most likely take it.

Vargas seems to have a very bright football and academic career ahead of him.

Cavaliers on the Rise

This past Friday night marked a huge win for Calvary’s Cavaliers. They confidently took on the West Monroe Rebels at the Rebel’s home field. This showdown did not disappoint, the game being a close one.

Though it was 14-0 Cavs at halftime, the second half the Rebels really stepped up their game. Both teams put in quite a bit of heart and effort, and played well. It is evident both football programs are excellent and forces to be reckoned with.

Regardless of the fact that the game was a good distance away from Shreveport, Calvary fans still showed up in good number. The love for the team and pride in the boys was shown loud and proud until the very end when the Cavs pulled out a 27-20 victory against West Monroe. Fans, parents, and students could be heard belting out the school’s alma mater in Coach Bachman Sr.’s post-game huddle. Keep your eye on the Cavaliers as next week they take on the North Caddo Rebels.

Parkway’s Defense stuffs Booker T. Washington in Homecoming game.

Parkway held BTW to just 154-yards of total offense in a commanding 44-20 win. The young Panther team held firm control of the game and had 44-0 led in by half time.

Offensively, Parkway was dominant through the air with 6 passing TDs. Keondre Wudtee threw for 5 while backup Justin Rogers contributed a touchdown in garbage time. Wudtee looked fantastic hitting his receivers in stride allowing them to burn the lions secondary. Artavious Lynn shined with 76 receiving yards and 2TDs, one coming off a long 53 yard run after a stellar catch. The always consistent Jared Lancaster led the team in receptions and pulled a down a TD. Parkway ran the ball well despite have zero rushing touchdowns. The Panthers knifed through the lions defense with a platoon of different backs. Stacy McCray had the best run of the night with a powerful 37-yard run. The inexperience Panther team continues to demonstrate it has a powerhouse offense with a show of superior air power and a collective effort on the running game.

Parkway kept Booker T. scoreless in the first half thanks to some penalties and a fantastic campaign on stopping the run. The Panthers held their opponents to just 50 yards of rushing and most of those yards were put up against the their second string. Overall, the defensive line for Parkway got overall great pressure to the lions QB all game and collected 4 sacks. C.J. Morgan is continuing his fantastic season with another interception and his typical lockdown coverage. BTW’s 20 points all came in the 2 half against Parkways backups.

Parkway is gearing up for its first district game at home versus Captain Shreve High school this Thursday.

Homecoming Success

Sportsmanship and school pride was abundant in Lee Hedges stadium this past Friday night as current students, parents, and alumni kicked off Byrd’s Homecoming weekend with a 50-3 victory over the Lakeshore Titans.

Byrd, currently 5-0 and ranked number one in the non-select power ranking, overall played extremely well and even had six different players- Tysen Hardmen, Dominic Haggerty, Krishun Cash, Tray Allen, Demondrick Wells, and Khoury Clark ranking in points for the Yellow Jackets. Half time had a presentation of the Homecoming Court and the fourth quarter ended with nothing but admiration for the charisma of Byrd.

Next Thursday Byrd will play Airline at Lee Hedges.

Seniors Are 'Royal' At Evangel's Homecoming

It's about that time again, Homecoming has finally arrived and dashed away. Special thanks to Mrs. Duron. She has continuously made it possible for each senior girl to be crowned queen of homecoming. All of the senior girls were royalty because they are children of the true King, the father in heaven. The participation of each and every senior girl gives homecoming fresh non-biased feel. Without Mrs. Duron's vision, the royals wouldn't have had the wonderful time as they were awarded.

Not only were the girls awarded with the royalty title but the handsome guys were as well! Every senior male was Homecoming King. The queens and kings were presented in front of the entire student body. There was practice the night before and it went very smoothly. Hard work payed off for the Kings and Queens of Evangel.

Lester Jones (presentation), Jasmine Bellard (practice)

The day after presentation the Kings and queens participated in Evangel's annual homecoming parade! Right after the streets were coated with royalty as each queen gave out candy to the standby viewers. When the route was finished there was a homecoming pep-rally prepared for the student body. It was full of excitement and everyone enjoyed every second of it!

Last but not least we have the homecoming game! Before the game the males walked the field with their mothers and fathers, being presented as homecoming kings. The same occurred for the females yet at a different time. The queens were presented during half time with their families. The football team conquered  KIPP Renaissance. Winning the Homecoming game, with the score of 57 to 6. Evangel had a successful homecoming and there are many more to come! Go Eagles!
